The Years 4 and 5 classrooms at St George’s are situated in Old Bank House, which became part of the School in 2006 after an extensive refurbishment programme to provide comfortable classrooms and music rooms.
Our aim is to make the transition from the Lower School into Year 4 and Old Bank House as seamless as possible and the care of the children is overseen by a dedicated class teacher with the additional support of Mrs Adriano, who, as Head of Lower School, knows the children well and is able to smooth the process for them.
The children in Years 4 and 5 are encouraged to develop more independent learning skills and build on the knowledge and skills they have gained in the Lower School. When the pupils enter Year 4 they are predominantly taught by their class teacher in all core subjects and many other subjects. In some subject areas, for example in Art, DT, French, PE, Games and Music, they are taught by subject specialists. This pattern continues throughout the Upper School.
As pupils move on to Year 6, lessons take place in the main school building and as the pupils move through Years 6, 7 and 8, enhanced demands are made on them in terms of the quality and depth of the work which they produce. Their work, development and wellbeing are carefully monitored by a designated Form Tutor in liaison with Mr Nicholas, Assistant Head (Academic) and Miss Squire, Assistant Head (Pastoral).
As part of our policy to educate and nurture the ‘whole child’, we aim to provide each pupil with a wide range of learning experiences. These include a French trip in Year 6, a day of leadership challenges in Year 7 and a residential expedition in Year 8 after Common Entrance exams have taken place.
We encourage pupils to take on responsibility and aim to develop their leadership and inter-personal skills as they move through the School. This includes opportunities to represent the views of their year group on the Pupil Council which meets once every half term. When they reach Year 8, pupils are able to take on further responsibilities, such as mentoring younger pupils, or becoming a Prefect, a House Captain or a Captain of Sport.
