The children in the Lower School were given an energetic introduction to African music this morning and everyone including teachers had an opportunity to play a djembe themselves. They heard how these drums are made from wood, goatskin and rope, and learnt about the three basic sounds that can be produced with a djembe – bass, tone, and slap – by striking the drum in various ways. At the end of each session the children had learnt to work as an ensemble, enthusiastically playing a traditional piece of music.
