St George’s students take to the screen

We were very proud to see our talented Chamber Choir, instrumentalists, Science Faculty Coordinator, John Williams, and Director of Music, James Wilkinson, on prime time television on Saturday 1 June.

The footage, which appeared in episode 6 of Channel 5’s Inside Windsor Castle series, began in the Boarders’ Common Room with a practice session for several of our budding rock musicians. Led by Mr Williams, who runs the school’s rock band in addition to inspiring the students’ love of science, John went on to describe his fond memories of being a chorister at St George’s during the 1990s.

Moving on to the Victoria, the Chamber Choir then thoroughly impressed the programme’s presenter, Dr Xand van Tulleken, with a rousing performance of Cantate Domino by Giuseppe Ottavio Pitoni, conducted by Mr Wilkinson. After professing he had never been in such close proximity to “a choir as good” as the Chamber Choir, Dr Xand asked the children to judge his own musical talent as he sang a few notes to see whether he had the requisite skills to join them.

Filmed on 24 November 2023 to the great excitement of the many children who recognised Dr Xand from his long-running CBBC programme, Operation Ouch!, the episode is now available to view on the channel’s streaming platform, My5.

The television appearance topped off a fantastic week for the Chamber Choir, who had just returned from a highly successful tour of the north west of England. The trip saw the students perform in no fewer than eight venues, including Choral Evensong at the majestic Chester Cathedral which is available to view online here.
